Developing the Nation's  spinners

The Spin Academy focuses on developing the Nations Spin Bowlers by leveraging on Worlds Best Practice and is led by former International Spin Bowler and Coach, Peter Such.

There are few people as passionate and knowledgeable about the magical art of spin bowling as Peter.

Whilst face to face contact time will be during the winter months, this isn’t just a winter training programme.

There will be regular opportunities to stay in contact throughout the year, with feedback given on any footage submitted.

Regular catch ups on a closed social media platform will also be included so as to keep updated on progress during the summer.

Membership of the Academy is a 12 month experience.

Through a blended approach we will look to help you to become the best spin bowling version of yourself. To do this we will

· Look at developing your technique so as to deliver spin consistently

· Help you to become tactically ‘more savvy’ so as to make best use of your talents in both red ball and white ball competition

· Work on your craft and explore variations to help you become more skilful as a bowler

· Look at the mental attributes needed to succeed as a spin bowler including that of being a resilient independent self-starter

· Train in a way that develops the movement patterns that support spin and a consistent action

Whilst working on themes that all quality spin bowlers apply to their games, spinners on the Academy will have individual work on’s captured on a Personal Development Plan. Progress will be tracked as they progress through the Academy Programme,     receiving support from both Peter and a number of support coaches and  specialists.

The Spin Academy will be headed up by former International Spin Bowler and Coach, Peter Such.

To learn more about Peter's career, see ‘About Peter’

The Programme consists of 10 full day (5 hour sessions) during which time we will immerse ourselves in the art of spin bowling exploring themes designed to impact positively on performance. These sessions will be spaced out over the winter months with time in between allowing for take away work to be completed and any changes to embed themselves. Sessions will be at the weekend or during school holidays.

‘I’ve known Peter Such for 30 years as a player and a coach, working closely with him whilst I was Head Coach of England and more latterly of the England Lions. Peter is a passionate, dedicated and knowledgeable coach who positively impacted all those with whom he worked. Peter became a valuable member of the management/coaching team, offering valuable contributions in a collaborative manner. I also liked the fact that he has always been willing to challenge at the right time and in the right way. “Having worked with Pete for many years he has continued to develop as a specialist spin bowling coach. His knowledge of both the mechanics and tactics for spin bowling are second to none having vast experience both as an International player and coach. Working for the ECB for over ten years has allowed him access to the very best players and research, meaning he has a real understanding of what it takes to be successful in the modern game. His style is methodical and measured, allowing players the freedom to learn at their own pace and to control the direction they want to go”

As a player, Peter had a 20 year career with Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Essex and England. During that time, as a spin bowler he took over 1,000 wickets in First XI County Cricket. Other notable achievements with the ball include holding the record for the most number  of overs bowled in an innings by a bowler in the history of the County Championship finishing with bowling figures of 86 overs 49 maidens 94 runs & 4 wickets.

Since leaving the game as a player, Peter has worked in numerous roles straddling both sport and business. For the past 10 years he was National Lead Spin Bowling Coach with responsibility to develop International Spin Bowlers, put in place programmes that support this development, as well as leading coach education and research into the art of spin bowling. Over recent years worked closely with the likes of Monty Panesar, Graeme Swann, Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid, Jack Leach, Matthew Parkinson, Zafar Ansari, Mason Crane and Dominic Bess, whilst also supporting England Under 19, England Lions and County Spin Bowlers. During this time he has accrued a wealth of knowledge, which he brings to all his coaching together with a passion for spin bowling.

This cutting edge research and coaching experience will form the basis of the Academy programme.

"Johnny played his first competitive county game for Herts yesterday and it was the best I have ever seen him bowl .. the difference in his approach to the crease (faster and straighter), time at the crease (getting up over his front leg) and follow through compared to before he started with you is quite exceptional progress and the ball flight was fantastic … 9 overs for 17 and had a dropped catch off him and beat the bat many times through flight and dip …. Great work..."
